In the compulsively readable sequel to her widely acclaimed debut novel, You, Caroline Kepnes weaves a tale that Booklist calls “the love child of Holden Caulfield and Patrick Bateman.”
Joe Goldberg is no stranger to hiding bodies. In the past ten years, this thirty-something has buried four of them, collateral damage in his quest for love. Now he’s heading west to Los Angeles, the city of second chances, determined to put his past behind him.
In Hollywood, Joe blends in effortlessly with the other young upstarts. He eats guac, works in a bookstore, and flirts with a journalist neighbor. But while others seem fixated on their own reflections, Joe can’t stop looking over his shoulder. The problem with hidden bodies is that they don’t always stay that way. They re-emerge, like dark thoughts, multiplying and threatening to destroy what Joe wants most: true love. And when he finds it in a darkened room in Soho House, he’s more desperate than ever to keep his secrets buried. He doesn’t want to hurt his new girlfriend—he wants to be with her forever. But if she ever finds out what he’s done, he may not have a choice…

With the previous book scaring the fuck out of me, I had high hopes for this one because, let's be honest, Joe's monologues are the creepiest thing I've ever read so far.
So, he killed a couple of people. Who am I kidding? He literally murdered the entire cast in the previous book using very creative methods. And he already has a new target in mind and is determined to follow her till the end of time or some shit like that WHILE concealing his identity as a serial killer. Damn son.
Little does he expect his new target to somehow escape and never be seen again. For the entire book. Meanwhile he meets Love. I'm serious, the woman's name is literally Love.
Love is the perfect match for Joe and is most likely a murderer like him because I got Joe vibes off her when she was introduced. Like, yay, happy little family of psychopaths (if you know what I mean).
I was extremely disappointed by this book, both in terms of writing style and plot. Caroline Kepnes really set the standard with her debut novel and I feel like it would have been so much better as a standalone as opposed to stretching out Joe's story until well, we don't know. Even though Joe's character had a somewhat positive development, which is good for the world but it made him naiver than he was before. Like you could be explaining him the difference between the Greeks and the Romans and in the end, he'll ask you who Roman is.
As usual, I enjoyed the author's brief introduction to the storyline in the first few chapters. Kepnes has the ability to create dark and twisting plot twists but this book didn't really do it any justice. I'm still debating on whether to complete the series because as much as I want to know Joe and Love's future, I also need to save brain cells seeing I don't have many left.
